Does Your Suit Fit? 7 Signs Its Time for Alterations
There’s nothing worse than pulling your favourite suit out of the wardrobe three days before a wedding, graduation or major event only to realise it doesn’t fit like it used to.
An ill-fitting suit can affect both your comfort and the overall look of your outfit. Whether your body shape has changed or an off-the-rack purchase isn’t sitting right, small fit adjustments make a world of difference.
At Opal Alterations & Dry Cleaning, our expert tailors in Canberra solve these exact fit issues every week. Here are 7 clear signs your suit needs alterations and how to test your fit before your next big occasion.

What Does a Well-Fitted Suit Look Like?
A well-fitted jacket has shoulder seams that finish where your arm begins, lies smoothly across the back and closes without strain. The sleeves should finish around the wrist, with a small amount of shirt cuff visible.
Trousers should hang cleanly from the waist and rest lightly on the shoes. If your suit does not meet these fit guidelines, professional suit alterations may help improve its overall fit.
7 Signs Your Suit Needs Alterations
1. The Shoulders Overhang or Dimple
If the shoulder seams extend beyond your natural shoulders or small dents appear beneath the sleeve heads, the jacket may not be sitting correctly across the shoulders. Shoulder alterations can be complex, so it is worth checking this area carefully when choosing a suit.
2. The Sleeves Are the Wrong Length
Sleeves that extend too far over the hands can make the jacket look oversized, while sleeves that sit too high on the forearm can make it look too small. Sleeve shortening may help improve the proportions, depending on the jacket’s construction and the finish required.
3. The Collar Gaps or Lifts Away
When the jacket collar floats off your shirt collar as you stand naturally, the balance is off. A tailor can often correct it and the whole jacket will sit better as a result.
4. The Jacket Pulls or Billows at the Waist
An X-shaped crease around the fastened button may indicate that the jacket is too tight. Loose fabric rippling across the back may suggest there is too much room.
Taking the waist in or letting it out may help create a cleaner, more balanced shape, depending on the jacket’s construction.
5. The Trousers Pool, Pinch or Gape
Fabric stacking above your shoes, a tight seat or a waistband that gapes at the back all point to trouser adjustments. Hemming and waist adjustments are often straightforward alterations that can make a visible difference.
6. The Jacket Length Looks Off
If the jacket looks disproportionately long or short against your frame, a tailor can assess whether adjusting the length is practical for that particular design.
7. Your Body or Your Style Has Changed
Weight change, a new training routine or a suit that has spent years in the wardrobe can all upset the fit. If you have lost weight, post-weight-loss alterations can rework a suit you already love instead of replacing it. Tapering trousers or trimming a jacket can also update an older cut.
A 60-Second Suit Fit Test
Stand in front of a mirror wearing the shirt and shoes you will wear on the day. Button the jacket and let your arms hang. Check the shoulders first, then the sleeve length, the collar and the waist. Finally, turn to the side and look at the back.
If you spot two or more issues from the list above, it may be worth having the suit assessed by a tailor before your next event.
Can Every Suit Be Altered?
Not every suit can be altered in every way. Adjustments such as trouser hemming, waist shaping and some sleeve-length changes may be relatively straightforward, while rebuilding shoulders or changing the length of a structured jacket can be more complex.
The result depends on the suit’s construction, available fabric allowance and the adjustment required. Opal’s suit alterations service can assess your suit in-store and explain which adjustments may be practical before you proceed.
